What to Expect When You Work With Great Lakes Benefits & Wealth Management

Andrew L. Brewer, Great Lakes Benefits and Wealth Management

From the first phone call to the discovery meeting, through orientation and into the ongoing support that carries you through life's celebrations and challenges, every step of working with us is built around one belief: you are more than a transaction. We want to be part of your family and your future. If you've been wondering what working with a financial planner from Ohio to Florida looks like, this article is for you.

There's No Cost to Getting Started

The first meeting is free. No pitch, pressure or obligation. You can go through the entire process and decide not to become a client. You still won't get a bill. We want to earn the relationship, not close a sale.

The Process: Four Steps, Every Client

The steps don't change based on your age or your account balance. The focus does, because your life is unique and your plan should reflect that.

Step 1: Discovery

We start by building an honest picture of where you are today. What you have, what you owe, your income sources, insurance, and beneficiaries. Retirement planning, wealth management, and long-term care planning all require a clear starting point. We build that together.

We pull your Social Security statement and look at what it's projected to pay at different claiming ages. Most people have never done that. We look at your 401(k), IRA, and any other retirement accounts so we understand the full picture before we build anything. We map your full family picture, too, because the people in your life shape more of the plan than most people expect.

We also build an expense sheet. Not a budget. A real picture of what your life actually costs: fixed bills and the variable spending that gets away from people. When someone asks if they can retire, I won't guess at an income number. I build it from what their life actually costs. That lets us be strategic about which account the income comes from, whether there's room for Roth conversions, and how to keep the whole plan tax-efficient.

Step 2: Orientation

This is the meeting people remember. We're not talking about assets anymore. We're talking about what you actually want.

What does retirement mean to you? Stopping completely, or just slowing down? What are you protecting your money for, and for whom? Is leaving an inheritance important? Do you want the tax liability handled now so your kids don't inherit a bill? Do you have a long-term care plan, or is that a gap we need to address? Most people have never been asked those questions by anyone. This is where the plan begins to feel like yours.

Step 3: Action Plan

We present the plan and lay out exactly what needs to happen and in what order. This is where the groundwork from Discovery pays off. Coverage gaps get addressed. Beneficiary designations get reviewed. Retirement income gets structured. Every piece of your financial picture has a place in the plan, and every step forward is intentional.

Step 4: Implementation

Implementation is where most people expect to be handed a to-do list and sent home. That's not how we work. We move through the plan together, step by step, and we stay accountable to it alongside you. Progress is steady, the process is clear, and at every stage, you know exactly where you stand.

What the Ongoing Relationship Looks Like

Some clients want one annual check-in. Others want to meet three or four times a year. There's no cap on phone calls or emails in between. As life changes, the cadence changes with it. We're here for the milestones and the hard moments, not just the annual reviews. That's what it means to be part of your family's future.

Serving Northern Ohio and Beyond

Great Lakes Benefits & Wealth Management works with families and pre-retirees across Sandusky, Elyria, Huron, Norwalk, Vermilion, and the greater northern Ohio area, as well as clients along the Florida Gulf Coast. Wherever you are, the process is the same and so is the commitment.
